FAQs
What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of the ADAPT study is to find out whether marine lipid compounds (natural substances made from omega-3 fatty acids) can help reduce pain in people with ongoing jaw or face pain. This condition is called temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
What does this study involve?
If you choose to participate, you will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to receive either:
• A dietary supplement containing marine lipid compounds, or
• A placebo (an inactive substance that looks the same)
Neither you nor the study team will know which group you are in during the study period.
How long will the study last?
The study lasts about 12 weeks in total.
During this time, you will:
• Attend 4 study visits at UNC-Chapel Hill
• Have a TMD examination of your face and jaw
• Take part in a simple pressure sensitivity test
• Complete questionnaires about pain, mood, and quality of life
• Provide two small blood samples for laboratory analysis (collected during study visits)
• Take the study product morning and night for 8 weeks
• Complete brief daily pain ratings using a symptom diary
